Foum Zguid to Erg Chigaga: The Alternative Desert Route

Zagora desert Morocco dunes

In short: The Foum Zguid route to Erg Chigaga is the quiet back door into Morocco’s biggest sand sea, trading the busier M’Hamid approach for a wilder 4×4 crossing over the Lake Iriki pan. Plan on a 3.5-4 hour off-road desert crossing from the village of Foum Zguid to reach camps that most tour groups never see.

Where is Foum Zguid and why use it for Chigaga?

Foum Zguid is a small oasis town in the Tata province of southern Morocco, roughly 260 km southeast of Marrakech and about 130 km southwest of Zagora. Most travellers reach Erg Chigaga, the remote dune sea near M’Hamid El Ghizlane, from the east. The Foum Zguid approach comes in from the northwest instead, cutting across the dried bed of Lake Iriki. It is a longer base to reach but far emptier on the sand, which is exactly why overlanders, photographers and repeat visitors choose it. You trade convenience for solitude and a genuine end-of-the-road feeling.

How long is the crossing and what is the terrain like?

From Foum Zguid the off-road crossing to the Erg Chigaga camps runs about 90-100 km and takes 3.5 to 4 hours depending on sand conditions and how often you stop. There is no tarmac on this stretch. The track passes flat hammada (stony desert), soft sandy sections and the vast Iriki pan, which fills with shallow water and flamingos only in rare wet years and is otherwise a cracked white expanse. On the ground it is genuinely rough: expect washboard corrugations, the odd moment stuck in soft sand while the driver lowers tyre pressure, and fine dust that gets into everything, so wrap a scarf over your camera and keep bags zipped. A capable 4×4 with a driver who knows the pistes is essential; there is no signage and GPS tracks matter. This is not a route to attempt in a rented city car. For how these regions connect, see our Morocco Desert guide.

How does it compare to the M’Hamid route?

The M’Hamid gateway is closer to Zagora and Ouarzazate, better served by hotels, and reaches the eastern edge of Chigaga in about 2 to 2.5 hours of 4×4 driving. It is the mainstream choice, and in high season the eastern camps can feel busy. Foum Zguid arrives from the opposite side, so you often have long dune ridges to yourself and cross the dramatic Iriki pan that the M’Hamid side skips. The trade-off is a longer, rougher drive and fewer amenities in Foum Zguid itself. Many travellers build a loop: in via one gateway, out via the other, to see both faces of the erg.

What does it cost and how many days do you need?

Prices vary with comfort and group size, so treat these as ranges rather than fixed quotes. A private 4×4 with driver from Foum Zguid to a Chigaga camp and back typically runs somewhere around 120-200 EUR per vehicle for the transfer, while an overnight package including one night in a desert camp with dinner and breakfast usually falls in the 90-160 EUR per person range. Standard bivouac tents sit at the lower end; camps with proper beds and private bathrooms cost more. Give yourself at least two days and one night to make the long crossing worthwhile; three days and two nights lets you slow down, ride a camel at dawn and explore the dunes on foot without rushing back. Prices climb over Christmas, New Year and Easter.

When is the best time to go?

The comfortable window is October to April, when daytime highs sit around 18-25 C and nights are cool to cold, sometimes near freezing in December and January, so pack a warm layer even after sunny days. Avoid June to August, when temperatures regularly exceed 40 C and the crossing becomes genuinely punishing. Spring can bring short sandstorms, and any rain, though rare, can make parts of the Iriki pan temporarily impassable. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Foum Zguid to Chigaga route safe? Yes, with an experienced local driver and a properly equipped 4×4. The real risk is doing it solo without navigation, water or recovery gear, which is not advised.

Can I drive it myself in a rental car? No. Standard rental agreements forbid off-road driving and city cars cannot handle the soft sand. You need a 4×4 with a driver who knows the pistes.

How far is Foum Zguid from Marrakech? About 260 km, roughly a 4.5 to 5 hour drive on paved roads via Taliouine and the Tizi-n-Taghatine pass.

Will I see other tourists at the dunes? Far fewer than on the M’Hamid side. The Foum Zguid approach and the western camps of Chigaga stay much quieter year round.

Do I need to book in advance? In peak season yes, especially for the better camps and around holidays. In shoulder months a day or two ahead is usually enough.
