New Year’s Eve in Marrakech: what are the options?

Most people searching for New Year in Marrakech are not yet decided on where. There are four realistic ways to spend 31 December here, and the desert is only one of them. Here is the honest comparison, including what each one is bad at.

Prices for riads and clubs vary enormously and change every year, so we do not quote them. Our own desert evening is 220 € per person with return transport.

Why people pick the desert

The city is at its loudest on 31 December. The Agafay is the opposite: forty minutes of driving and there is nothing but the plateau, the Atlas on the horizon and the sky. Dinner is served in a heated tent, there is Gnawa music, and the countdown happens outside under the stars rather than in a crowd.

Why people do not

Two honest reasons. You cannot change your mind at eleven o’clock and go somewhere else, because you are out of town. And it is cold: the Agafay drops close to 5 °C after dark in late December, which is why the tents are heated and why we tell everyone to bring a coat rather than discover it on arrival.

When to book

The camps that run a New Year’s Eve dinner are few and they fill by early December. Last season the last places went in the first week of the month. If you are set on the desert, book before then; if you are still comparing, at least hold a date.
