M’Hamid & Erg Chigaga: Morocco’s Remote Sahara

Zagora desert Morocco dunes

In short: Erg Chigaga is Morocco’s largest and most remote dune field, reached from the village of M’Hamid el Ghizlane at the end of the Draa Valley. Unlike the roadside dunes at Merzouga, the last stretch here is a 2-3 hour 4×4 crossing off-tarmac, which is exactly why Chigaga stays wild and uncrowded.

Where exactly is Erg Chigaga?

Erg Chigaga sits in the deep south of Morocco, roughly 60 km southwest of M’Hamid el Ghizlane, the last settlement before the open Sahara. The dune field stretches about 40 km long and up to 15 km wide, with the tallest crests reaching around 60-100 metres. (For scale, Morocco’s very tallest dunes are at Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, which climb to about 150 metres.) M’Hamid itself lies at the tail of the Draa Valley, some 90 km beyond Zagora and roughly 450 km from Marrakech. There is no paved road to the erg: the final leg is soft piste and open gravel plain, so a 4×4 with an experienced driver is essential. That isolation is the whole appeal for travellers who want silence, empty horizons and a night sky untouched by light pollution.

How does it compare to Erg Chebbi?

Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is Morocco’s famous poster desert: tall (up to about 150 m), photogenic and reachable by paved road right to the dune foot, which means dozens of camps and, in peak season, busloads of visitors. Erg Chigaga is the opposite. It is broader in overall spread, harder to reach and far less developed, so you may camp with only a handful of other travellers within sight. Chebbi is the better pick for a quick, comfortable first taste of the Sahara; Chigaga rewards those willing to trade convenience for genuine remoteness. If you are weighing the two, our Morocco Desert guide breaks down each dune region in detail.

How do you get there from Marrakech?

The classic route crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), then drops to Ouarzazate, past the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, down the Draa Valley through Agdz and Zagora, and finally to M’Hamid. That is around 450 km and about 8-9 hours of driving to M’Hamid, so most itineraries split it over 2 or 3 days with stops at Ait Ben Haddou, the Draa palm groves and Zagora. From M’Hamid, a 4×4 covers the last 60 km of piste to the erg in about 2-3 hours over corrugated track and soft sand. Prefer a slower pace? Some operators run camel treks of 2-5 days that walk into the dunes at a traditional, unhurried rhythm.

What is the camel trek and camp night actually like?

Camel treks here are led on foot at walking pace by a local cameleer; expect roughly 1 to 1.5 hours in the saddle to reach a bivouac, ideally timed for sunset or sunrise when the light turns the sand deep orange. Keep your weight loose for the lurch as the camel stands, and wrap a scarf against wind-blown sand. At camp, dinner is usually a communal tagine and bread, followed by Berber drumming around a fire, then a sky so dark the Milky Way is plainly visible. Nights are cold outside the peak of summer, so a fleece and hat make the difference between magical and miserable.

When is the best time to go?

The reliable window runs October to April. Autumn (October-November) and early spring (February-April) bring pleasant daytime temperatures of roughly 20-28 C with cool but bearable nights. Winter (December-January) has warm, clear days but genuinely cold nights that can drop to freezing, so pack proper layers. Summer, June to August, is brutal, with daytime highs above 45 C, and is best avoided for anything more than a fleeting sunset visit. Late spring can occasionally bring a sandstorm, though these usually pass within a day.

What does a trip cost and where do you sleep?

Accommodation ranges from simple nomad-style bivouacs to comfortable camps with private walled tents, real beds and en-suite toilets. As a rough guide, a shared overnight package from M’Hamid with 4×4 transfer, dinner, breakfast and one night typically runs around 90-160 EUR per person, while premium private camps sit higher. A full 2-3 day trip from Marrakech with transport, guide and full board usually falls somewhere in the 150-400 EUR per person range depending on comfort and group size, with the 4×4 leg being the main reason Chigaga costs more than a standard Merzouga tour. Booking through a local agency keeps money in the community and gives you drivers who genuinely know the piste. Treat any oddly cheap or suspiciously precise quote with caution and confirm exactly what is included.

What can you do at the dunes?

Beyond watching sunrise and sunset from the high crests, activities include camel rides, sandboarding down the steeper faces, guided walks to nearby wells and the dry lakebed of Lake Iriki, and short visits to nomad families who still herd in the area. Nights are the highlight: with no towns for tens of kilometres, the stargazing is exceptional, and many camps lay on drumming and a slow tagine dinner around the fire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a 4×4 to reach Erg Chigaga? Yes. The final 60 km from M’Hamid is unpaved piste and soft sand, so a 4×4 with a local driver is required; ordinary cars simply cannot make it.

How many days do I need? A minimum of 2 days and 1 night works from M’Hamid, but 3-4 days from Marrakech is far more comfortable and lets you enjoy the Draa Valley and Ait Ben Haddou en route.

Is Erg Chigaga safe? Yes, it is a well-established route with experienced guides. Travel with a reputable agency, carry plenty of water, and never drive the piste alone without local knowledge.

Can I visit as a day trip? Not realistically from Marrakech given the distance. From M’Hamid a long day trip is possible, but at least one overnight is strongly recommended to experience the dunes properly.

What should I pack? Layers for cold nights, a scarf for wind and sand, sunscreen, sunglasses, closed shoes for walking, and a power bank, since camps have limited or solar-only electricity.
