In short: Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi, Morocco’s tallest golden sand dunes (up to ~150 m) and the country’s most famous Sahara experience. It sits in the southeast near the Algerian border, about 560 km / 9–10 hours from Marrakech or 470 km / 7–8 hours from Fes, and is built around camel treks, overnight desert camps and some of the darkest night skies you will ever see.
Where is Merzouga?
Merzouga is a small village on the western edge of Erg Chebbi in southeast Morocco, close to the Algerian border. It is the classic base for exploring the golden Sahara dunes that most travelers picture — the dunes rise straight out of the flat hammada right behind the village.
How to get to Merzouga
Most people arrive on a multi-day tour from Marrakech (560 km, 9–10 h over the Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, and the Dades and Todra gorges) or Fes (470 km, 7–8 h via Ifrane and the Ziz Valley). The road is paved the whole way, so no 4×4 is needed to reach the village — only for dune excursions. You can also self-drive, or fly to Errachidia (about 2 hours north) and transfer by road.
Things to do in Merzouga
Camel trekking into the dunes — led at walking pace, roughly 1–1.5 hours to reach a camp — timed for sunset or sunrise; overnight in a Berber desert camp; 4×4 tours; sandboarding; quad biking; hearing the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia; visiting nomad families; and, after rain (usually late winter and spring), the seasonal lake Dayet Srji with its flamingos. Sunrise from a dune ridge is the moment most people remember.
Desert camps in Merzouga
Camps range from simple bivouacs with shared facilities to luxury tents with private bathrooms, real beds and full dinners. The key detail: book a camp inside the dunes rather than at the edge, so you step out of the tent into sand and silence. Nights are cold — bring a fleece even in summer — and electricity is limited, so carry a power bank and a headlamp. See how the whole trip fits together in our Morocco desert complete guide.
Best time to visit Merzouga
October to April is most comfortable; spring and autumn are ideal. Summer days are extremely hot, so activities happen at sunrise and sunset only. Winter nights can drop near freezing, but the skies are crystal clear for stargazing.
