Best Time to Visit the Moroccan Sahara (Month by Month)

Best time to visit the Moroccan Sahara desert climate

In short: The best time for the Moroccan Sahara is October–April, with autumn (Oct–Nov) and spring (Mar–Apr) the sweet spots: warm days around 20–28°C and cold nights. Skip mid-summer, when Merzouga and Zagora regularly pass 40°C; winter days stay pleasant but nights can drop below freezing.

Autumn (September–November)

Our favourite window. The fierce summer heat breaks by late September, dune-climbing is comfortable again, and the light is soft and golden for photos. Nights turn cool rather than cold, so a fleece and the camp blankets are enough. October is the single most reliable month.

Spring (March–May)

Also excellent, especially March and April: mild-to-warm days and the valleys along the Marrakech–Merzouga road (Dades, Todra) are green after the winter rains. By mid-May the far south starts to heat up, so aim for earlier in the season.

Winter (December–February)

Underrated for a reason many miss: the clearest skies of the year for stargazing over Erg Chebbi, and quiet camps. But desert nights are genuinely cold, often near or below 0°C, while days stay a comfortable 15–20°C. Bring a warm hat, gloves and a proper jacket for the evening around the fire.

Summer (June–August)

Very hot: 40°C+ is normal at Merzouga and Zagora, and the sand radiates heat well after dark. Trips still run, but you plan around the sun — camel treks and dune walks at sunrise or just before sunset, and midday for resting in the shade or by a pool. Carry far more water than you think you need.

What to pack for the temperature swing

The day-to-night gap is the thing first-timers underestimate. Whatever the season, layer: breathable long sleeves and a scarf (chèche) for sun and blowing sand by day, plus a warm mid-layer for the moment the sun drops. October to March, add a real jacket for the night.
