What actually counts as the “real” Sahara in Morocco?
The Sahara proper begins where the last mountain ridges fade into open sand seas. In Morocco that means two famous ergs (dune fields): Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, whose dunes are the country’s tallest at up to roughly 150 m, and Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid el Ghizlane, a wilder, longer sea of dunes with far fewer crowds. This is the postcard Sahara of camel caravans, total silence and orange sunrises. Reaching it is a commitment: Merzouga sits about 560 km (a 9-10 hour drive, normally a 3-day tour) from Marrakech, and Erg Chigaga about 450 km plus a final 2-hour off-road stretch that needs a 4×4.
So what is the Agafay “desert” near Marrakech?
Agafay is a stone desert, not a sand desert. Just 40 minutes (roughly 30-45 km) southwest of Marrakech, it is a landscape of bare, rolling clay-and-rock hills with barely any dune sand at all. It photographs beautifully at golden hour with the snow-capped Atlas behind it, and it now hosts dozens of luxury and mid-range camps. But if you arrive expecting rolling golden dunes like the movies you will be surprised: the sand you see in Instagram photos is often trucked in around pools and lounge areas. Agafay is best understood as a scenic, close-to-town desert escape, not the Sahara itself, and on that honest basis it is excellent.
How much time and money does each one cost?
Agafay wins on convenience. A half-day trip (camel or quad ride, lunch, sunset) runs roughly 25-60 EUR per person; an overnight in a camp typically ranges from around 60 EUR for a simple tent to 250 EUR-plus for luxury domes with private bathrooms. You can leave Marrakech at 4pm and be back by 10pm.
The real Sahara is a multi-day undertaking. A shared 3-day / 2-night tour from Marrakech to Merzouga (crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou and the Todra or Dades gorges) usually costs roughly 80-150 EUR per person. Private tours with better camps run higher, from a few hundred euros per person depending on comfort. Which should you choose for your trip?
Choose Agafay if you have only one or two nights in Marrakech, want a stargazing dinner without a long drive, or are travelling with young children or older relatives who cannot manage a long round-trip on mountain roads. Choose the real Sahara if you have at least three days and want genuine towering dunes, a proper camel trek into an erg (led at walking pace, about an hour to camp), and the deep silence you only get tens of kilometres from the nearest town. When is the best time to go?
Timing matters more in the deep south. The best months for both are broadly October to April, with mild days and cool, clear nights; the shoulder months of March-May and September-November are especially pleasant. Summer (June-August) is brutal in Merzouga and Chigaga, where daytime highs regularly exceed 45 C; Agafay is hot too but survivable because you can retreat to Marrakech.
