What the Agafay Desert is, in one paragraph
The Agafay Desert is a rocky “stone desert” about 30 km southwest of Marrakech, a drive of roughly 40 minutes. It is not part of the Sahara: there are no large sand dunes here, but bare ochre hills, wide views over the Atlas Mountains and, in winter, snow on the summits. That is why it works as a day trip or a one-night escape, while the Sahara dunes of Merzouga or Erg Chigaga need two to four days.
How to get to the Agafay Desert from Marrakech
A private transfer is the reliable way in, because Marrakech petit taxis are not allowed to leave the city. October to April is the comfortable season, with mild days and cool evenings. In July and August the middle of the day is hot, so activities move to early morning and sunset. Desert nights are cool all year, so bring a warm layer, closed shoes for quad and buggy rides, sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen.
