The Marrakech departure suits most travellers, while Fes works for one-way Sahara routes. Most tours start in Marrakech and either return to Marrakech (round trip) or finish in Fes (one-way, ideal if you fly out of Fes). The classic route crosses the High Atlas via Aït Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges, to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga; Zagora and Erg Chigaga are the alternative, quieter dunes further west.
