Four climates in one country
Morocco packs a lot of geography into a fairly compact space, and the weather follows the land. Off the Atlantic, the coast is tempered by the ocean and rarely reaches extremes. Move inland and the daily range widens; without the sea to soften it, summer afternoons in Marrakech and Fez get fierce and winter nights turn cold. Climb into the Atlas and altitude takes over, with snow on the high passes for months. Drop south past the mountains and you reach the pre-Sahara, dry and sunny nearly all year, with the desert’s signature gap between blazing days and cold nights.
The coast: mild and even
Cities like Essaouira, Casablanca, and Rabat see the steadiest weather in the country. Summers are warm rather than hot, often sitting in the mid to high 20s Celsius with a reliable breeze, which is why Moroccans head to the coast in July and August. Winters are cool and can be grey and damp, with the occasional Atlantic storm, but frost is rare. Essaouira in particular is windy year-round, great for surfers and kitesurfers and a bit blustery for a beach day.
The interior cities: hot summers, cool winters
Marrakech and Fez set the tone for the center. From June to August, daytime highs regularly pass 38 Celsius, and the middle of the day is best spent in the shade or by a pool. Spring and fall are the pleasant seasons, with warm days in the low to mid 20s and cool evenings. Winter brings mild, bright days around 18 to 20 Celsius but genuinely cold nights, and riads without good heating can feel chilly after dark, so bring a warm layer.
The mountains: altitude rules
The High Atlas keeps its own calendar. The trekking season runs May to October, when the trails are clear and the village guesthouses are open. In winter the high peaks around Toubkal hold deep snow, the passes can close, and even sunny days are cold once you gain height. If you are driving south to the desert over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, expect a real temperature drop at the top and the odd winter closure after heavy snow.
The desert: hot days, cold nights
The pre-Sahara and the dunes are dry and sunny for most of the year, but the daily swing is large. From roughly mid-June to early September the desert floor is extreme in the afternoon, which makes the long Sahara drive from Marrakech, around nine to ten hours each way, hard going. October to April is the comfortable season, with warm days and clear, cool nights. In December and January those nights drop close to freezing on the dunes, so layers are not optional.
The Agafay desert, about 40 minutes from Marrakech, follows the same broad pattern but is far easier to reach for a sunset or a single night. How to pack for the swing
Because the weather changes so much by region and by time of day, layers do more work here than a single warm coat or a stack of t-shirts. For a fall or winter desert trip, plan for warm afternoons and genuinely cold nights: a fleece or jacket, a hat, and something to cover your neck against wind and sand. Add a sun hat and sunscreen year-round, since the light is strong even when the air is cool. On the coast, a windbreaker earns its place. In the mountains in winter, treat it like any cold-weather trip.
