In short: Zagora is the quickest taste of the Moroccan Sahara from Marrakech — about 360 km and 7 hours each way, usually done as a 2-day / 1-night tour. The dunes are smaller than Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi, but if you are short on time it is the realistic way to sleep in a desert camp.
Where is Zagora?
Zagora sits at the southern end of the palm-filled Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest river oasis. It was a real caravan gateway to the Sahara — the town is famous for its old “Timbuktu 52 days” sign, marking the camel journey to Mali. The dunes used for camps are just outside town at Tinfou and nearby: small golden hills rather than the towering ergs of the deep south.
Zagora vs Merzouga
Zagora is closer, cheaper and fits a 2-day trip, but its dunes are modest. Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has Morocco’s tallest dunes — up to about 150 m — but sits ~560 km / 9–10 hours away and needs 3 days. Choose Zagora for speed, Merzouga for the classic big-dune Sahara. If you have only half a day, the rocky Agafay stone desert 40 minutes from Marrakech is the fallback (it is stone, not sand dunes).
Things to do in Zagora
The headline is a camel trek at sunset — led at walking pace, about 1 to 1.5 hours out to the camp — followed by dinner, drumming and a night under the stars. Beyond the dunes, the drive itself is the attraction: the Draa Valley kasbahs, the twice-weekly Zagora souk, the 17th-century Koranic library and traditional green pottery at Tamegroute, and the palm groves of Amazrou across the river.
Best time & how to visit
October to April is best; summer afternoons are very hot and winter nights are genuinely cold in the camp, so bring a warm layer whatever the season. Almost everyone comes on a 2-day Marrakech tour that crosses the Tizi n’Tichka pass (about 2,260 m) over the High Atlas, then follows the Draa Valley south — the same road passes close to Ait Ben Haddou if your operator includes the stop.
