What does “Agafay” mean?
“Agafay” is the name of the rocky desert region about 30 km southwest of Marrakech, in the foothills of the High Atlas (Arabic: اكفاي; Tamazight: ⱰⱲⱮⱭⱧ). Locals call it Sahraa Agafay — the Agafay desert. It is a place name for this stone-and-hills plateau rather than a common word with a documented translation, which is why Agafay is best known simply as Marrakech’s “stone desert”.
