Description

A one-hour camel ride is the gentlest way to get out into the Agafay, and the one we recommend to first-timers and families. You set off from the edge of the camp with a local guide leading the caravan on foot, and follow the old herding tracks across the stone plateau — this is the rocky, lunar Agafay, not the sand dunes of the Sahara, and the walking pace lets you actually take it in.

The ride lasts about an hour at a slow, steady rhythm. We go out in the late afternoon whenever we can, so you cross the plain as the light drops and the Atlas turns pink on the horizon. Children ride with a parent or on their own camel depending on age, and the guide adjusts the route to the group.

Good to know

• About 40 minutes from central Marrakech; we arrange the transfer separately if you need it.
• Bring a hat, sunglasses and closed shoes — the ground is stony.
• Best light is the two hours before sunset.

It pairs naturally with a lunch or a sunset dinner at one of the Agafay camps, which we can add to your day.
