Agafay Desert & Atlas 4×4 Day Trip from Marrakech

At a glance
| What | A full day in a private 4×4: off-road tracks across the Agafay plateau, the Lalla Takerkoust lake and the first Atlas valleys. |
|---|---|
| Price | 180 € for the vehicle for the day, up to six people, driver-guide included. That is 30 € each at six, 45 € each at four. |
| When | Pickup around 08:30 at your riad, back in Marrakech late afternoon. All year; spring and autumn are the pleasant seasons. |
| Why a 4×4 | The tracks between Agafay, the lake and the Atlas foothills are not tarmac. A minibus stays on the road; a 4×4 does not have to. |
| Private | Your vehicle, your driver, your pace. We stop where you want and change the route on the day if you feel like it. |
| Booking | WhatsApp +212 661 454 738. Tell us the date and how many you are. |
Up to six people, driver-guide and fuel included. Lunch, a camel ride or a pool stop are added at their own price, and we book them with you.
Most day trips out of Marrakech follow the tarmac. This one does not. A 4×4 lets you cross the Agafay plateau on the tracks the camps use, drop down to the Lalla Takerkoust lake, and climb into the first Atlas valleys in the same day — a loop that simply is not possible in a minibus.
We price the vehicle, not the seat: 180 € for the day, up to six people. Two friends pay 90 € each; a family of six pays 30 € each. That is the opposite of how the big platforms price it, and it is why a small group is better off with us.
What the day looks like
The route below is the one we run most often. It is a private day, so nothing is fixed: tell us in the morning that you would rather spend two hours at the lake than stop in a village, and the driver adapts.
| Time | Where |
|---|---|
| 08:30 | Pickup at your riad or hotel in Marrakech |
| 09:15 | Onto the Agafay plateau, off the tarmac and onto the tracks — grey clay hills, the Atlas on the horizon, the camps below |
| 11:00 | Down to the Lalla Takerkoust lake, a reservoir at the foot of the mountains; stop for photographs or a walk along the shore |
| 12:30 | Lunch — at a camp in the Agafay, by the lake, or with a Berber family in a village, as you prefer |
| 14:30 | Into the first Atlas valleys: terraced fields, walnut groves, a village where the road runs out |
| 16:00 | Mint tea, then the drive back through the foothills |
| 17:30 | Back at your riad |
Prices by group size
One 4×4 costs 180 € for the day whether there are two of you or six. The cost per person therefore falls as the group grows, which is the reverse of a per-seat tour.

| 2 people | 1 | 180 € | 90 € |
| 3 people | 1 | 180 € | 60 € |
| 4 people | 1 | 180 € | 45 € |
| 5 people | 1 | 180 € | 36 € |
| 6 people | 1 | 180 € | 30 € |
| 7 to 12 people | 2 | 360 € | from 30 € |

Why a 4×4 rather than a minibus
Three practical reasons, and none of them is about looking the part.
The tracks. The Agafay plateau is crossed by dirt pistes that link the camps. A minibus takes the sealed road around them and you see the desert from a distance. A 4×4 goes over the ridges, which is the whole point of coming.
The last kilometre. Several Atlas villages and most Agafay camps sit at the end of an unsurfaced track. In a two-wheel-drive you stop and walk; in a 4×4 you arrive.
After rain. Agafay clay turns slippery for a day or two after a downpour, which is rare but happens between November and March. A 4×4 keeps the day running instead of cancelling it.
What you can add to the day
The 4×4 is the frame; what you put in it is up to you. A camel ride in the middle of the plateau from 30 € per person, lunch at a desert camp, or a pool day pass from 65 € if you would rather swim than walk.
If you want to end with the light instead of starting with it, the Agafay sunset tour covers the evening version. For the mountains on their own, see the Atlas Mountains day trip and the Imlil and Ait Mizan valley.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a 4×4 day trip from Marrakech cost?
180 € for the vehicle for the whole day, up to six people, driver-guide and fuel included. That works out at 90 € each for two people, 45 € for four and 30 € for six. Lunch and any activity are separate.
How many people fit in one 4×4?
Six passengers comfortably, with luggage for the day. Larger groups take a second vehicle at the same rate.
Is the off-road part rough?
It is bumpy, not violent. The drivers take the tracks at a pace that suits the passengers, and children handle it well. Tell us if someone gets carsick and we adjust the route.
Can we do the Atlas and the Agafay in one day?
Yes, and that is exactly what this day is for. The Agafay sits between Marrakech and the mountains, so the two link naturally. What you cannot do in a day is reach the Sahara: Merzouga is 560 km away and needs three days.
What should we bring?
Closed shoes, a hat and sunglasses, and a jacket from November to March because the Atlas valleys are cooler than the city. Dust gets everywhere on the tracks, so a bag for the camera helps.
Is it the same price all year?
Yes, 180 € per vehicle whatever the season. What changes is the start time: earlier in summer to do the driving before the heat.
