If you are sleeping in an Agafay camp and you have booked a dawn balloon flight, you have a problem the balloon operators do not solve: their included pick-up starts from a Marrakech hotel or riad, not from a camp in the stone desert. This private transfer fills that gap. We collect you at your camp, drive you to the launch field your operator uses, and bring you back afterwards. 100 EUR per vehicle each way, 200 EUR per vehicle for the round trip — per car, never per person, up to six passengers.

What exactly does this transfer cover?

This is a private road transfer between an Agafay camp and the balloon launch field, in a private car with a driver, timed around your flight slot. It is the transport only: the flight itself is booked separately, either with us on the sunrise balloon flight over Marrakech or directly with your operator. We drive from your camp in the Agafay, cross Marrakech while the city is still asleep, and reach the launch field on the plains north of Marrakech in time for the crew to brief you before inflation. After landing and breakfast, the same driver takes you back to your camp. Because the camps sit southwest of Marrakech and the balloons lift off to the north, this is a longer drive than the standard hotel pick-up, which is exactly why operators do not include it.

How much does it cost?

All our transfers are billed per vehicle, never per person. A family of four pays the same as a couple.

Agafay camp to balloon launch field100 EURper vehicle, up to 6 passengers
Balloon launch field back to Agafay camp100 EURper vehicle, up to 6 passengers
Round trip, both legs200 EURper vehicle, up to 6 passengers

For comparison, our standard private transfer between Marrakech and an Agafay camp is 80 EUR per car. The balloon run costs more because it is a far longer route at an unsociable hour: the driver crosses the city twice, waits at the field through the flight, and the vehicle is committed for most of the morning rather than for a single 40-minute hop.

Why is the drive from Agafay longer than from Marrakech?

Geography, not pricing. The Agafay desert lies about 30 km southwest of Marrakech, roughly a 40-minute drive from the city on a normal day. The balloon launch fields sit on the open plains north of Marrakech, over the palm groves and within sight of the Atlas foothills. A hotel pick-up in Marrakech therefore starts halfway along the route; a camp pick-up in the Agafay starts on the wrong side of the city and has to pass through it. Add the pre-dawn hour and you have a drive that no operator will absorb into a standard flight package. This is the single practical reason guests sleeping in Agafay are told the balloon is “not possible” — it is possible, it simply needs its own vehicle.

Which Agafay camps do you collect from?

All of them. If your camp is not on this list, send us its name on WhatsApp and we will confirm the pick-up, because new camps open in the Agafay every season — our guide to the Agafay camps is kept up to date.

Does it work with any balloon operator?

Yes. We drive to whichever launch field your operator uses, so the transfer is not tied to one company. Tell us which operator you have booked with and what time they want you on the field, and we set the departure from your camp backwards from that. If you have not booked a flight yet, we can arrange one: a sunrise flight over the Agafay side is 185 EUR per person, which includes the operator’s own pick-up and return and a Berber breakfast after landing — but that pick-up is from a Marrakech address, which is why camp guests still need this transfer.

How does the morning actually go?

Balloon operators collect Marrakech guests between roughly 5 and 6 in the morning, depending on the season, because the balloons have to be in the air at first light when the wind is calm. From an Agafay camp you leave earlier than that, since the drive is longer. We do not publish a fixed departure time here because it is set by your flight slot, and operators move the slot with the season and the weather. Once your flight is confirmed, we agree the camp departure on WhatsApp and the driver is at your camp before it.

The rest of the morning follows the operator’s programme: arrival at the field, watching the crew inflate the envelope, a short safety briefing on how to stand and brace for landing, about an hour aloft, then the landing, the breakfast and the flight certificate. Your driver waits through all of it. You come back to the same car and the same driver, and you are at your camp in time for a second breakfast or a swim.

What happens if the flight is cancelled?

Balloons only fly when the wind is safe, and a responsible operator will cancel rather than take a risk. If your operator cancels before the driver leaves, the transfer is cancelled with it at no cost to you, and we move it to the day your flight is rebooked. If the cancellation comes once you are already on the field — which happens, because the decision is sometimes taken at the launch site — your driver is there and takes you straight back to your camp. You are never left at a field north of Marrakech at six in the morning looking for a taxi back to the desert, which is the real risk of arranging this leg yourself.

Is it worth doing from Agafay rather than moving to Marrakech?

For most guests, yes. The alternative is to give up your camp night, sleep in Marrakech to catch the included pick-up, and lose the part of the Agafay experience people come for: the silence, the stars and the sunrise over the stone hills. At 200 EUR per vehicle for the round trip, a couple pays 100 EUR each and a family of four pays 50 EUR each to keep their camp night and still fly. Compare that with the cost of a wasted hotel night and a second transfer, and the arithmetic usually favours staying in the desert.

What should you bring for a pre-dawn departure?

Dress for two different mornings. You leave an Agafay camp in the dark, when the stone desert has given back all the heat of the day and the air is genuinely cold, and you land a few hours later under a sun that is already strong. Layers solve both: a warm jacket or fleece you can take off, long trousers, and closed shoes rather than sandals, because the launch field is rough ground and you will be standing on it while the crew works. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen for after the landing, and a hat. A balloon basket has no seats and no shelter, so leave bulky bags in the car — your driver stays with the vehicle throughout, which is one of the quiet advantages of having your own transfer rather than a shared shuttle.

Three ways to fly a balloon from an Agafay camp

There are only three honest options, and the cost of each is easy to compare.

OptionWhat it costs youWhat you give up
Keep your camp night, add this private transfer200 EUR per vehicle round trip, on top of the flightAn early night and a short sleep
Move to Marrakech for the night to use the operator’s included pick-upA hotel night plus a transfer back to the desertThe camp night, the stars and the desert sunrise
Skip the balloonNothingThe flight

Split across a vehicle, the first option is usually the cheapest of the two that include a flight, and it is the only one that keeps the night in the desert. That is the whole reason this transfer exists.

What can you do with the rest of the day?

You are back at your camp by mid-morning with a full day in front of you, which is the other argument for not giving up the camp night. Most guests go straight into something slow: a pool day pass at an Agafay camp from 65 EUR per person, or a late lunch and a siesta before the heat drops. If you still have energy, a camel ride in the Agafay at sunset closes the day where the balloon opened it, from 30 EUR per person. The full range is on our Agafay tours page, and we can chain any of it to the same driver so you are not paying for a second vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the transfer from an Agafay camp to the balloon base?

It is 100 EUR per vehicle each way and 200 EUR per vehicle for the round trip, for up to six passengers. The price is per car, not per person, so a family pays the same as a couple.

Is the balloon flight included in this price?

No. This is the road transfer only. A sunrise balloon flight is 185 EUR per person and is booked separately, with us or with your own operator.

Can you collect me from any camp in the Agafay?

Yes, from every camp and lodge in the Agafay, including the ones not listed on this page. Send us the name of your camp on WhatsApp and we confirm the pick-up and the departure time.

What time do we leave the camp?

Earlier than a Marrakech pick-up, which operators set between roughly 5 and 6 in the morning depending on the season. The exact time depends on the slot your operator gives you, so we fix it with you once the flight is confirmed rather than guess it here.

Why does this cost more than the Marrakech to Agafay transfer?

Because the route is much longer. Agafay is southwest of Marrakech and the launch fields are north of it, so the car crosses the whole city twice and then waits through the flight. The standard Marrakech to Agafay transfer is 80 EUR per car for a 40-minute drive one way.

Does the driver wait during the flight?

Yes. The same driver and the same car stay at the field for the whole flight and breakfast, and take you back to your camp afterwards.

How many people fit in one vehicle?

Up to six passengers per car. Larger groups are covered by a second vehicle at the same price per vehicle, and we confirm the arrangement before you book.

What if the weather cancels the flight?

You pay nothing for the transfer if the flight is cancelled before the driver sets off, and we move it to your rebooked date. If it is cancelled at the field, your driver is already there and brings you back to the camp.

Can you do the return leg only?

Yes. Each leg is sold on its own at 100 EUR per vehicle, so if your operator collects you somewhere else and you only need the drive back to your camp, that is 100 EUR.

How do I book this transfer?

Send us a message on WhatsApp with your camp, your date and your flight slot if you already have it. We confirm by message, there is no booking platform in between and no middleman taking a cut.
