There is no need to book ahead. Across the road you’ll find the old ksar quarter with cooperatives selling carpets and silver, so budget a little extra time and cash if you like to browse. How does it fit a wider desert itinerary?
Think of Taourirt as the cultural warm-up before the dunes. From Ouarzazate the classic route continues through the Draa Valley palm groves toward either Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes (the tallest reach around 150 m) or south to Zagora and M’Hamid for the remote Erg Chigaga sea of sand reached by 4×4. A 2-day Marrakech-Zagora loop (about 360 km each way, roughly 7 hours) is the quicker desert option; the 3-day Merzouga run is the deep one.
