Dates of the Tafilalt: Morocco’s Desert Fruit

Camel caravan in the Moroccan desert

In short: The Tafilalt is Morocco’s great date-palm oasis in the southeast, the same region you cross on the way to the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga. Its groves produce prized varieties like Mejhoul and Boufeggous, and autumn (roughly Oct-Nov) is harvest season, making it a delicious, low-key highlight of any desert trip.

Where is the Tafilalt, and why does it matter to travelers?

The Tafilalt (also spelled Tafilalet) is a vast palm oasis strung along the Ziz and Rheris rivers in southeastern Morocco, centred on the towns of Erfoud and Rissani. If you are driving from Fes to Merzouga (about 470 km, 7-8 hours), you pass right through it; the Ziz Valley gorges and the sudden sea of palms below are one of the most photographed stretches of the whole route. From Marrakech the desert run is longer (roughly 560 km and 9-10 hours to Merzouga, usually done as a 3-day tour), but you still arrive in the same date country. In short, the Tafilalt is not a detour, it is the doorway to the dunes.

What kinds of dates grow here?

Morocco grows dozens of date cultivars, and the Tafilalt is one of the country’s richest zones for them. The one travelers hear about most is the Mejhoul (Medjool) – large, soft, caramel-dark and genuinely different from the dried supermarket version. Locals also swear by Boufeggous, a firmer everyday date, plus Aziza, Jihel and Bouskri, each with its own texture and price. Walking a Rissani souk you will see them sold loose by the kilo, mounded in reed baskets, graded by size and stickiness. Vendors expect you to taste before buying, so do.

When should you visit for the harvest?

The date harvest, the khettara season in local rhythm, runs broadly from late September into November, with October the heart of it. That happens to overlap with the best window for desert travel overall (October to April), when daytime heat is manageable. Summer here is brutal – 40C and above – and the palms give welcome shade but little relief from the glare. Winter days are pleasant and clear, though desert nights turn genuinely cold, so if you visit for late-season dates pack a warm layer for camp. Erfoud even holds a date festival in autumn celebrating the crop, timed to the harvest.

How do dates fit into a real desert itinerary?

Picture a typical 3-day loop to the dunes. You reach Erfoud or Rissani in the afternoon, buy a bag of Mejhoul for the road, then continue the last 30-40 minutes to Merzouga where Erg Chebbi’s dunes rise to around 150 metres – the tallest in Morocco. Dates travel perfectly: they are the classic energy food for a camel trek or a dawn dune climb, and mint tea served with a few dates is the standard welcome at desert camps. If your trip runs the other way toward Zagora (about 360 km and 7 hours from Marrakech, often a 2-day tour) or the remote Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid, reached only by 4×4, you will find palm groves and date stalls there too, though the Tafilalt remains the country’s most famous date basket. What does it cost, and how do you buy well?

Shared 3-day Merzouga tours from Marrakech typically run around 80-150 EUR per person, and that gets you into date country without any extra effort. The dates themselves are cheap by European standards – a few euros will fill a bag – but prices swing widely by variety, with premium Mejhoul the dearest. Buy in Rissani or Erfoud rather than at tourist stops for better value, taste first, and check that soft dates are plump rather than dried out. A kilo makes an easy, genuinely Moroccan gift to carry home. If Merzouga is your base, our related guide covers the practical side of the dunes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Tafilalt the same as the Sahara dunes? No. The Tafilalt is the fertile oasis and date-growing region; the big sand dunes of Erg Chebbi lie just beyond it, about 30-40 minutes past Rissani at Merzouga.

Are Tafilalt dates the same as Medjool dates? Mejhoul (Medjool) is one of the varieties grown here, and among the most prized, but the region produces many others like Boufeggous and Aziza too.

Can I visit during the harvest as a tourist? Yes. October is peak harvest and also good weather for the desert, so a standard 3-day tour naturally lets you buy dates fresh at Rissani and Erfoud markets.

Is Agafay a good place to see date palms? Not really – Agafay is a rocky stone desert about 40 minutes from Marrakech with no dunes and no oasis groves. For dates and palms you want the Tafilalt in the southeast.

Are dates safe to bring home? Dried and packaged dates travel and keep well; just check your home country’s food import rules and keep them sealed for the journey.
