Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has Morocco’s highest dunes — up to around 150 m — and is the classic choice, but it is a 9–10 hour drive each way, so plan three days. Zagora is closer (about 7 hours) and fits a two-day trip, though the dunes are lower. If you only have an afternoon, the rocky Agafay desert, 40 minutes from Marrakech, gives you a camp night without the long haul. For a first Sahara trip most travellers are happiest with the 3-day Merzouga loop because the drive itself — the Atlas pass, Ait Ben Haddou, the gorges — is half the adventure.
When to go & what to pack
October to April is the sweet spot: warm, clear days and cool evenings. Summer (July–August) is brutally hot, often well over 40°C, and midday in the dunes is genuinely unpleasant. Whatever the season, nights are cold — near freezing in December and January — so pack layers even in spring. Bring closed shoes for walking on sand, a scarf or shesh to keep sand off your face and neck, high-SPF sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, a headlamp for the camp, and a power bank because you will not find sockets in most desert camps.
What it costs & what to expect
Shared 3-day Merzouga tours generally run about 80–150€ per person, depending on group size and how comfortable the camp is (basic Berber tents at the low end, en-suite “luxury” tents at the top). A typical day one is a long, scenic drive with photo stops; day two ends with a camel trek led at walking pace — roughly an hour to an hour and a half into the dunes — followed by dinner, drumming and a sky full of stars; day three is a pre-dawn wake-up to watch sunrise from a dune ridge before the drive back. The camel trek is gentle but hold the saddle horn on the descents.
