Ait Bouguemez Valley Trek From Marrakech

The Ait Bouguemez valley trek from Marrakech takes you into a wide green valley high in the central Atlas that locals call the Happy Valley. It still moves at a farming pace, and this is a two-day trip: a long scenic drive up, an afternoon and a full day on foot, and a night in a family-run gite. We run it privately with your own driver and a mountain guide who knows the paths and the people.

Day 1: Marrakech to the valley

We pick you up early and drive north-east out of Marrakech towards Azilal, climbing steadily as the land turns from plain to mountain. The last stretch winds over a high pass and drops you into Ait Bouguemez in the early afternoon. After lunch at the gite we set off on an easy warm-up walk along the valley floor, following the fields between villages like Tabant and Agouti while the guide points out how the water is shared and the crops rotated. Dinner and the night are at the gite.

Route: Marrakech, Azilal, the pass into Ait Bouguemez, gentle afternoon walk between Tabant and Agouti. Night in a Berber gite.

Day 2: Full day on foot, then back

After breakfast we walk the main circuit of the valley. The path climbs to the marabout and old collective granary at Sidi Moussa, which sits on a cone-shaped hill with a clear view over the whole valley. We come down through more villages, stop for tea with a family, and return to the vehicle in the afternoon. The drive brings you back into Marrakech in the evening, dropped at your accommodation.

Route: Gite, Sidi Moussa granary, valley villages and fields, back to the car, drive to Marrakech.

When is the best season? Late spring through October is best, when the passes are clear and the valley is green. Winter can bring snow to the high road.

Can you adjust the walking or the pick-up? Yes. The daily distances are moderate and we can make them shorter or longer, and we pick up from any address in Marrakech.
