New Year’s Eve in the Sahara at M’hamid El Ghizlane (Erg Chigaga)
This New Year’s Eve tour takes you deep into the Moroccan Sahara. This 3-day, 2-night trip runs from Marrakech to M’hamid El Ghizlane, the last village before the great dunes, where you spend New Year’s Eve at a desert camp with dinner and a live show under the stars. From €380 per person.
Your programme, day by day
The programme below details each of the 3 days, including New Year’s Eve at a desert camp on 31 December.
Day 1 — Marrakech → Skoura or the Todra Gorge (by minibus). Leave Marrakech and cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Depending on your preference, you overnight in the palm oasis of Skoura or in the dramatic Todra Gorge. Dinner and overnight.
Day 2 — 31 December → M’hamid El Ghizlane → desert bivouac (New Year’s Eve). Continue by minibus to M’hamid El Ghizlane. From there you transfer by 4x4 into the desert to reach the bivouac. Settle into your camp, then celebrate with a New Year’s Eve dinner and show around the fire, under a sky full of stars.
Day 3 — 1 January → return to Marrakech. Watch the sunrise over the dunes, enjoy breakfast at camp, then begin the long scenic drive back to Marrakech — expect around 9 hours on the road on day 3, with stops along the way.
Optional add-on
- Camel ride — a 1-hour dromedary ride in the dunes, €40 per person (optional).
