This Atlas adventure takes two days to cross the High Atlas from Marrakech, sleep over near Ouarzazate, and come back through Berber country and the old kasbahs. You travel privately in an air-conditioned 4×4 with your own driver, so the stops for photos or tea are up to you. Two days is enough to see Ait Ben Haddou properly and still have the valleys the next morning.

Trip highlights

  • The Tizi n’Tichka, the high pass that carries the road over the Atlas
  • Ait Ben Haddou, the earthen kasbah you’ve seen in a dozen films
  • Ouarzazate and the Taourirt kasbah on the edge of the desert
  • The Skoura palm oasis and the Amridil kasbah among the trees
  • Berber villages built in mud and straw the old way
  • A night away from the city, under a big quiet sky

Day 1: Marrakech over the pass to Ouarzazate

We collect you after breakfast and climb south onto the Tizi n’Tichka, which switchbacks up to around 2,260 metres with Berber hamlets clinging to the slopes. We stop for the views and a glass of tea. By midday we reach Ait Ben Haddou, with time to cross the river and walk up through the packed houses before lunch. In the afternoon we carry on to Ouarzazate for the Taourirt kasbah, then settle in for the night.

Route: Marrakech, Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate. Night in a guesthouse.

Day 2: Skoura oasis and the road home

After breakfast we drive out to the Skoura palm grove, where the Amridil kasbah sits among the trees; it’s one of the best kept in the south and worth a slow walk. From here you can add the Valley of Roses, or we turn back over the pass. On the way home we stop in a Berber village to see how families still live up here, then drop you at your Marrakech hotel in the evening.

Route: Ouarzazate, Skoura oasis, Amridil kasbah, Berber village, back over the pass to Marrakech.

FAQ

Is this a private trip?

Yes. The 4×4, the driver and both days are yours alone, so you won’t share the car or wait on a group.

What time do we leave and return?

We usually start around 8am on day one and get you back to Marrakech in the evening on day two, and we can shift the times to fit your plans.

When is the best season?

Spring and autumn are ideal, with mild days over the pass. Winter can bring snow on the Tichka, and summer is hot in the south, so we start early.

Can you customise the route?

We can. Add the Dades or the Valley of Roses, spend longer in a village, or upgrade the overnight. Tell us what you’d like and we’ll shape the two days around it.
