Because it is so close, you can leave the city after lunch, watch the sun drop behind the Atlas foothills, eat a tagine at a tented camp and still sleep out under the stars without a long road trip. The Sahara: the real dunes
For the classic golden dunes you have two realistic options from Marrakech. Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) has Morocco’s tallest dunes, rising up to around 150 m, but it sits about 560 km away — a 9–10 hour drive best done as a 3-day tour. Zagora is closer, about 360 km and roughly 7 hours, and works as a 2-day trip, though its dunes are smaller and less dramatic. The long Merzouga route is a big part of the experience: you cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass over the High Atlas, stop at Ait Ben Haddou and pass the Todra and Dades gorges. Commit to at least three days and head for Merzouga; pick Zagora only if you are tight on days.
