Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Sahara Trip to Choose?

Merzouga vs Zagora Moroccan Sahara dunes

In short: Merzouga has the big golden Erg Chebbi dunes but needs 3 days; Zagora is the fastest Sahara from Marrakech (2 days) with smaller dunes. Choose Merzouga for the classic Sahara, Zagora for speed.

Distance & days

Zagora: ~360 km, ~7 hours each way, done as 2 days / 1 night. Merzouga: ~560 km, 9–10 hours each way, done over 3 days. Both cross the High Atlas on the Tizi n’Tichka pass, but Merzouga keeps going far to the southeast. If you only have 2 days, Zagora is the realistic choice; squeezing Merzouga into two days means most of it is spent in the car.

The dunes

Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi is the postcard Sahara — Morocco’s tallest dunes, rising up to about 150 m, glowing orange at sunrise and sunset. Zagora’s dunes (Tinfou and nearby) are low golden hills by comparison. For the “wow” moment and the best photos, Merzouga wins clearly. Worth noting for context: the truly remote sea of dunes, Erg Chigaga near M’Hamid, is reached only by 4×4 and is a longer trip than either.

Cost

Zagora is cheaper because it is shorter. As a rough guide, a shared 3-day Merzouga tour runs about 80–150 EUR per person, with a 2-day Zagora trip below that; private tours cost more. Prices swing with season, group size and camp comfort, so treat these as ranges and confirm what is included. Both trips normally cover transport, the camel trek and a night in a desert camp with dinner and breakfast.

Which should you choose?

Merzouga: 3+ days and you want the real big dunes and the scenic road past Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges. Zagora: 2 days and short on time. Only half a day to spare? The rocky Agafay stone desert 40 minutes from Marrakech is the quick alternative — though it is stone, not sand dunes.
