Balloon rides in Marrakech happen at first light, when the air is calm and the sun is just coming up behind the Atlas. We launch out on the plains north of the city, over palm groves, low villages and stretches of semi-desert, with the snow line of the mountains off to the south. It’s an early start and a quiet way to see the land from above, and we take care of the pick-up, the flight and a proper breakfast afterwards.

How the morning goes

A driver collects you from your riad or hotel in the dark, usually between 5 and 6am depending on the season, and drives out to the launch field on the plains beyond the palmeraie. While the crew fires up the burners and fills the envelopes, you can watch the balloons take shape and go up in the half light. Then you climb into the basket and lift off as the sun breaks over the mountains.

Route: Marrakech hotel pick-up, launch field north of the city, roughly one hour aloft over the groves and open country.

The flight drifts with the wind, so the pilot follows the air and the ground crew tracks you below. From up there you look down on farm plots, dry riverbeds and small settlements, with the High Atlas filling the southern horizon. After landing you’re driven to a tent for a Berber breakfast of bread, eggs, pancakes and mint tea, handed your flight certificate, and taken back to Marrakech by late morning.

FAQ

Is the transport private? Yes, your car and driver to and from the launch field are private. The balloon basket itself is shared with other passengers, which is normal for balloon flights.

What time do we start and finish? Pick-up is very early, around 5 to 6am, and you’re back at your hotel by late morning, roughly 11am to noon.

When is the best time to fly? Balloons fly year round in fair weather, with spring and autumn the most comfortable. Flights only go ahead if the wind is safe, and we rebook you if the weather cancels.

Can you arrange pick-up and a private basket? We pick up from any Marrakech address, and a private or VIP basket can be arranged on request for a higher rate.
