A birthday in the Agafay works because of the hour. You arrive in the late afternoon, the light goes orange on the grey hills, dinner is served outside as it cools, and by nine o’clock there is nothing above you but stars. It is forty minutes from Marrakech, so nobody loses a day of their holiday getting there.
We are a travel agency in Marrakech, not a camp. That distinction is the whole point of this page. A camp will tell you its own camp is the right one. We have no camp to fill, so we can tell you that the camp with the best pool is the wrong choice for a quiet sixtieth, and that the most photographed one is often the noisiest in high season.
Which camp for which birthday
This is the question that decides whether the evening works. There are roughly thirty camps in the Agafay and they are not interchangeable. What follows is how we actually match them.

How the evening runs
Pickup from your riad or hotel is timed on sunset, so it moves through the year: around 16:30 in December, closer to 18:30 in June. The drive takes forty minutes, the last stretch on a dirt track.
You arrive while there is still light. Your table is already set apart from the camp’s regular service, decorated, with the cake kept aside. Mint tea, then the hour before sunset, which is when the photographs happen whether anyone planned them or not.
Dinner is served as it gets dark: Moroccan salads, a tagine or a méchoui for larger groups, fruit and pastries. The cake comes out when you want it, not when the kitchen decides. Musicians and a fire show slot in after dinner if you have booked them.
The drive back is around 22:30 in winter and towards midnight in summer. If you would rather not leave, most camps can add tents; we price the night separately because rates differ enormously between camps.

What goes wrong, and how we avoid it
Four things spoil desert birthdays, and all four are avoidable if someone tells you in advance.
Wind in spring. March and April can bring a dry wind across the plateau that lifts dust and makes an outdoor table unpleasant. Camps with a walled courtyard or a large tent are the answer; we watch the forecast the day before and move the table inside rather than cancel.
Cake in summer. At 40 °C a buttercream cake does not survive the drive. From June to September we order cakes that hold, or have them delivered later in the evening rather than sitting out from six o’clock.
Cold at night. The Agafay drops fast after sunset, near 5 °C from November to March. Guests arrive in summer clothes because Marrakech was warm at five in the afternoon. We say it twice before the day, and the camps put out blankets.
Noise rules. Camps sit close to one another and several stop amplified music at a set hour. If your group intends to dance, that has to be settled when booking, not discovered at eleven o’clock.
Adding an activity to the afternoon
Many groups arrive earlier and make an afternoon of it. A camel ride from 30 € works for every age; quad biking from 35 € and buggies from 100 € suit a group of friends. A pool day pass from 65 € turns the birthday into a whole day.

How far in advance should we book?
Two weeks is comfortable for a small table. For a large group, or for a date between April and October, count on a month or more: the good camps fill early.
Can you organise a surprise?
Yes, and it is most of what we do. We work with whoever is organising, keep the camp briefed, and the table is set before the group arrives so nothing is assembled in front of the guest of honour.
Is there alcohol?
It depends on the camp; not all are licensed. Tell us early if it matters, because it narrows the list considerably.
What if it rains?
Rain is rare in the Agafay. If the forecast is against us we move the table under cover at the same camp, change the date, or cancel at no cost. We tell you the evening before, not on the day.
