Marrakech Weather Month by Month

In short: Marrakech weather is dry and sunny most of the year, with hot summers and mild winters. The sweet spot for sightseeing is roughly October to April, when days are warm but not punishing. July and August get very hot, often above 38C, so summer visits mean early starts and afternoon shade. Rain is rare and mostly falls in the cooler months.

The city sits inland on a plain just north of the High Atlas, so it has a semi-arid climate: lots of sun, low humidity, and big gaps between day and night temperatures, especially in winter. Knowing that swing is the key to packing well and planning your days, since a t-shirt afternoon can turn into a jacket evening in any month outside high summer.

Day and night temperature swing

More than the daytime high, the day-to-night drop catches people out. Because the air is dry and there is little cloud cover, heat escapes quickly after sunset. In spring and autumn, a warm afternoon can cool by ten degrees or more by night. In winter it is sharper still, and desert or mountain evenings feel colder again. The simple fix is to carry a layer you can add or shed, whatever the forecast high says.

Spring: March to May

Spring is one of the best windows. March starts mild and warms through May, with daytime highs climbing from the low twenties Celsius into the low thirties by late spring. The light is good, the gardens are green, and the Atlas peaks still hold snow, which makes for a nice backdrop. Evenings in March still cool off, so keep a jacket handy, while by May the nights are pleasant. This is a busy season, so book riads and popular sights ahead, especially around Easter.

Summer: June to August

Summer is hot and dry. Highs often sit in the high thirties and can pass 40C in July and August, with the sun strong from mid-morning. It is still doable if you plan around the heat: see the medina and gardens early, rest at midday, and go out again in the evening when Jemaa el-Fna comes alive. Nights are warmer but more bearable, and the low humidity keeps the heat dry rather than sticky. Carry water, wear a hat, and favor shaded courtyards and rooftop terraces with fans. A riad with a plunge pool is a real help in these months, and many travelers pair a summer city stay with a couple of cooler days on the coast at Essaouira.

Autumn: September to November

September is still hot but eases as the month goes on. October and November are excellent, with warm days, cool evenings, and thin crowds compared with spring. This is a strong time for both the city and day trips, since the desert and the Atlas are comfortable rather than baking. Pack a light layer for evenings, which start to cool off by November. Rain is still uncommon this early in the cool season, so you can plan outdoor time with confidence.

Winter: December to February

Winter days are mild and usually sunny, with highs around the high teens to low twenties Celsius, but mornings and evenings get genuinely cold, sometimes near freezing at night. The Atlas gets snow, and you may want a warm jacket after dark. Most rain, though still modest, falls in these months, usually as short showers rather than all-day downpours. Daytime sightseeing is pleasant and crowds are thinner, so winter is underrated for a city break, as long as you do not assume warm nights and pack accordingly.

What this means for desert trips

What to pack by season

Packing for Marrakech comes down to sun protection year round plus warmth in the cool months. A short guide:

  • Spring and autumn: light clothes for the day, a sweater or jacket for the evening, and sunscreen.
  • Summer: loose, breathable clothing, a hat, strong sunscreen, and a swimsuit if your riad has a pool.
  • Winter: layers, a warm jacket for nights, and something warmer still for the Atlas or a desert camp.
  • Any season: comfortable walking shoes for the medina and modest clothing to cover shoulders and knees near mosques.

What this means for desert trips

The desert follows the same rhythm but sharper. In the Agafay stone desert, about 40 minutes from the city, October to April gives warm days and cool, clear evenings, which is ideal for a sunset camp dinner. Summer afternoons out there are intense, so a sunrise or after-4pm slot works better. Our Agafay desert tours run year round, and we shift timings with the season. The same October-to-April guidance holds for the long Sahara routes toward Merzouga; our Morocco desert guide covers those in detail.
